Fabric Sale

I love fabric. I don't sew but I love fabric. I'm always attracted to yardage, linens and such things at thrift shops and yard sales. Sheets and towels, curtains, you know, stuff like that. Something about patterns printed on cloth makes me happy.

I rescued this set of deep pink towels--with embossed roses--at an estate sale recently and they're coming to the shop tomorrow. But you get first peek now, right here, tonight, on the blog. All pieces are in super condition, vintage goodness to brighten any bathroom!

Yard sales and new in shop

When we go out hunting vintage sometimes it's random, and sometimes it's with a plan of action. I like to make lists. Early on Saturday, after I brew my Americano, carefully searching Craigslist, I create our list of estate and yard sale stops for the day. The GPS and Chris (aka handy hubby) route us out and we're off!

Last weekend was an example of quality of goods over quantity of stops. The kind of day when we find two really good estate sales and fill up boxes!

The top photo shows why I sometimes wish we had a brick and mortar outlet--1970s brown vinyl high-back chairs, baby! With castors. That swivel. And rock. Uh, huh, yes-indeedy.

Monticello Yard & Garden Show

Weeks back my good friend Kate and I stopped in to Monticello Antique Mall and enjoyed their annual Yard & Garden Show.

This mall has a HUGE room full of vintage and antique decor for outdoors year round. If you like it rusty, crusty, chippy, well-loved and with plenty of character, this is the place for you (and me)!

I just found the photos on my iPhone and remembered the reason that I took them was to share with all of you.

In putting together the style of our new home, I've been studying the interior design styling in a collection of books from the Pottery Barn design library. I've always been a fan of Pottery Barn but I have more of an IKEA budget! Both companies have a clean and simple asthentic that really appeals to me; I especially love the way they find ways to build storage into every room they create. Layers of textures and just the right color palettes don't hurt either.

I've also been creating more Etsy treasuries lately, and I'm challenging myself to work with bolder colors. I lean hard to the muted end of color in my home (with the exception of fire engine red!) and find that's often popular in themes on Etsy as well. One of my newest treasuries is an attempt to capture the feel of Eastern Asia in a palette of crimson, pink, orange and gold.

Garden Ideas

One of the best things, and one of the worst things, about our new house is the yard. It's great having a yard since we haven't had one before. It's not so great that the yard we have needs quite a bit of work to make it the way we would like it to be. The folks that lived here before were a good few decades older than us, and they didn't plan they just planted. They planted what they liked and just put things wherever there was an open space.

I've been fussing about the lack of flow and want to get some open space back. I don't claim to be any sort of a green thumb but I am good at research. I've been Online reading and searching and learning. Our plan is to take inventory, clean up, remove, move around, get rid of and kill. Then we plan layout. Later will be hardscaping, irrigation and outdoor lighting. Then we plant and enjoy. We're going slow, recycling and reusing and looking for salvaged materials. The goals are to keep it eco-friendly, urban-clean, modern not fussy, with low-water use and year-round appeal.

The collage above includes some of my yard ideas. It's difficult to picture it without seeing what's there now so I'll be sure to post some photos of the "before" and our updates as we eventually get to the "after".

By-the-way...the blog is morphing again to include some posts about our house. Being a mid-century house and having many projects to dig into, I think it's rather appropriate for a blog about all things vintage!

We're Moving!

It's been awhile since I've updated, and much has been afoot in that meantime. We bought our first house last week! Things are crazy busy getting ready for the move, work, and school. Thought I should stop by and let you know that I'll be on hiatus from blog posting for at least a few weeks. The shop will remain open as long as possible until we move but then closed for a few weeks as well. When the dust clears from this big undertaking I'll be back with more posts, and, of course, with summer coming up quick, estate/yard/garage sale season promises *new* vintage finds to share with all of you!

Tell us your name, location and something interesting about you.

My name is Emily Orth. I've lived in Portland, Oregon for seven years now with my husband, eight year old son, and dog, but I grew up on the east coast and have moved back and forth between the coasts several times. Wherever I've lived I've always been drawn to the local flea markets and antique shops.

How long have you been collecting vintage?

I've been interested in collecting vintage things since I was very young. I've always had an eye for the odd and unusual. I majored in graphic design in college which helped me develop my design sense as well.

What got you into collecting and selling vintage?

My parents were the practical sort who didn't share my vintage aesthetic, but I had a wonderful aunt who travelled a lot and loved antiques, jewelry, and decorative arts. She had a pair of pink silk couches in her living room that absolutely knocked me out. I thought they were quite daring. I adored looking through her collections when she allowed and she inspired me to see beyond the ordinary. A few years ago my sister introduced me to Etsy, and at the time I was looking for a home-based business idea. Things just clicked when I realized that I had amassed "inventory" over the years. I opened my first shop, Garden Home Vintage (vintage jewelry and accessories) in 2008. I opened Kitchen Table Vintage for housewares and home decor in 2010.

What are your favorite eras for vintage?

I really love the period between the '50s and the early '70s, when high-quality things were still made in the USA and available to everyone. Plus, the style and colors just can't be beat.

What would be your ultimate vintage find?

It's hard to say what my ultimate vintage find would be. I'm endlessly falling in love with the new things that I discover, but I suppose it would be something kitchen-related. I love the marriage of beauty and utility.

Where kinds of venues supply the majority of your vintage goods?

I have a series of local thrift shops and flea markets that I prowl regularly. I also find wonderful things at yard sales and estate sales, and whenever I travel I keep an eye peeled for new vintage sources; a happy coincidence that this is one of my favorite ways to spend time.

Is vintage popular in the city/town where you live?

Portland is vintage-obsessed, which makes finding the great stuff a bit of a competitive sport.

What do you find most challenging and most rewarding about your vintage business?

I think one of the most challenging things about my vintage business is the up and down nature of it. It's definitely cyclic and it's taken some work to successfully deal with the slow times. Many useful life lessons learned with this business.

One of the most rewarding things is the flexibility and independence of having my own business so I can be available to my son on his schedule. This is very important to me. I also love sharing the wonderful things I find with my customers. It's warms my heart to find beautiful items and to see that other people appreciate them as well.

What kind of things are in your personal vintage collections?

I love to collect vintage kitchen items that I can use every day. They make me smile on a regular basis. i have a colorful collection of Pyrex pieces that I really enjoy. One of my favorite finds is an elaborate set of 1950s wine glasses that I found at a yard sale for a dollar. They really enhance the wine-drinking experience for me and they remind me of when I was a kid and drank my milk out of an old cut glass goblet, one of the only antique items in my house growing up.

Vintage Music: The Ronettes ~ 1963

Perhaps the best remembered of the "girl group" of the early 1960s, The Ronettes achieved their biggest success under producer Phil Spector. In towering black beehive hairdos and dark eye makeup, the Ronettes were a classic mid-sixties girl group with a sultry twist; vulnerable but tough, sexy but sweet. The first single in July 1963 is a classic, "Be My Baby." Ronnie's distinctive, seductive vocal delivery, along with her now legendary, "Woh-oh-oh-oh," drove teenage boys wild. By October, 1963, this song was at number two in the United States, and it became an International hit when it reached number four on the English charts.

Tell us your name, location and something interesting about you.

Good Day! ... My name is Martha Layton Smith I live in a little town about 30 miles west of Chicago as the crow flies and I am known among my friends as "McGuiver" because I can repair just about anything using random items!

How long have you been collecting vintage?

I honestly think I was collecting Vintage finds before I even can remember. I still own my original tricycle, pedal car and all of the Barbie clothes and stuffed animals made by my Grandmother when I was a little one!

What got you into collecting and selling vintage?

Seems I have been collecting forever. I saw a reusable purpose for things long before the reuse, recycle slogan was coined! After my father had passed in 1989... I happened to be driving past a newly established antique mall in my town. It was the anniversary of the date that my dad had died...I saw it as a sign...stopped in and from that day forward... I was hooked!

What are your favorite eras for vintage?

I have to admit, I am all over the place with that. Every room in my home has a different theme. My kitchen is very 1930-40, dining room is Shabby Chic...white and chippy, My family room is Vintage travel and southwest...filled with kachinas. My main focus is industrial and retro. I have everything from old advertising signs to oil drums re-purposed as side tables in my living room. I love old globes, maps and vintage books! I have tons of Original Vintage art as well as oil paintings I have created. I love bright, bold graphics.

Where kinds of venues supply the majority of your vintage goods?

I love a great flea market! My favorite is in Wisconsin.

Is vintage popular in the city/town where you live?

Oh, yes. I was once the manager of a small home decor and Antique shop. I am now the assistant manager at Treasure house Resale Shop in Glen Ellyn, IL, as well as the curator of my own vintage booth at Lil' Red Schoolhouse in Warrenville, IL.

What do you find most challenging and most rewarding about your vintage business?

The challenge is the lull between sales. I used to sell about 5 items daily. I have to admit, I have not been listing as much as I would like. My focus tends to be on helping others. I am team Captain for the Vintage Etsy Society Street Team (vestiesTeam ) on Etsy and that takes up lots of my time lately! ( not complaining at all... I love it!)

What kind of things are in your personal vintage collections?

Vintage Children's books, readers, 30-40's kitchen items. Unusual globes ( love the colors in the old ones) I've just purchased, on Etsy, a wonderful art table from 1925 an Antique Chautauqua Traveling Teacher Art desk! I adore it! I love all vintage art, paints, brushes, Pastels and old tubes of oil paints in Art boxes!

Alexandra Keller, Tucson, AZ, and I used to dance in a Ukrainian dance troupe, Kashtan.

How long have you been collecting vintage?
Since college. It started with thrifting for cool clothes. I go in cycles where I collect a lot of things, and then clean house.

What got you into collecting and selling vintage?
I've always liked pieces with history. My family is from Ukraine, and we have treasures from the old country with all sorts of stories. Recently, the selling came from vintage jewelry I just couldn't take apart for Jewelry Recycled. Then I wandered into housewares one day. I purchase what I like, but I can't keep everything!

What are your favorite eras for vintage?
I used to be a shabby chic sort of girl, but now I'm favoring mid century modern.

What would be your ultimate vintage find?
The one yet to be found is a mint Chanel bag! My favorite find so far is this fantastic cigarette holder...

Where kinds of venues supply the majority of your vintage goods?
Mostly thrift stores and church shops. I've also been to some estate sales, but that's tougher with a toddler in tow.

Is vintage popular in the city/town where you live?
Oh, yes! I think a lot of older folks who have lived here held onto lots of great things. So there is a lot of vintage to go around.

What do you find most challenging and most rewarding about your vintage business?
I'm trying to keep my inventory at a more manageable level. I'm trying not to buy everything in sight! It's so hard to drive by a thrift store without stopping. The pull of thrifting is strong. I enjoy putting custom blocks together for people, and today I was able to sell a tin to a woman who had the same one as a child. I also really like to hear that customers liked the little 'extra' I may have tucked into their package, or that they liked the packaging. I try to make each purchase feel a little special with some ribbon or paper, more like a present.

What kind of things are in your personal vintage collections?
I have some great Vera Neumann blouses, a fantastic Halston handbag, and some mid century modern chairs which I had recovered. I have a thing for chairs, so I might sell some. But I'm sure I'll replace them with other chairs before long.

Miniature Vacation: Disneyland Paris

Today is the ninth anniversary of Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris in Marne-la-Vallée, France. Tilt-shift videos use different photo angles, focus settings and color saturation adjustments to make the subject of a photo appear miniature.

It took more than seven months and 4,000 photographs to produce this 2:38-minute clip.

Road Trip: Aurora Architectural Mills

On a sunny day in February we ventured south of Portland to explore Aurora Architectural Mills. A massive, ramshackle storehouse packed from floor to rafter (and a second floor) with wonderful salvaged house parts, wood, plumbing, fixtures, claw foot bathtubs, stained glass windows, brass and copper widgets galore, furniture, oddities and much, much more.

Their display style is a combo of super-size junk store (read: maximizing every inch) and jumbly-fun vignettes. Just think how many old homes, church buildings, barns and businesses have been dismantled to assemble all of this quality vintage goodness.

The amount of eye candy is overwhelming in such a good, good way. The walls are covered, the ceilings are strung with antique lighting (all for sale), floor space is at a premium. Bins, baskets, wood crates and cupboards overflow with textures. Those brass headboards became secret garden gates in my mind...

My apologies for the slight blur in my photos--forgot my real camera and had to make do with my 3MP cell phone.

Three County Road Trip

Last weekend we took a road trip along the long route to the north end of the Oregon Coast, and drove through the towns on the Columbia River Highway (aka Historic US Route 30). We stopped at all points where a butterfly marks a town on the map. All of these places are small on population (a few if you blink, you miss 'em), and all are big on history and character.

We found a handful of new-to-us thrift shops, charity stores and discovered a monthly flea market of vintage treasures inside the grange hall of tiny Svenson, Oregon.

Along our journey we met some nice rural folks, bought some cookies to support the girl scout troop in Rainier, OR, and enjoyed dinner (fresh fish and chips) with our friends who live in Garibaldi where we stopped for the night. We also filled our trunk and backseat with oodles of vintage finds for the forrestina vintage shop...all coming soon!

Chris hunts for old games and toys, and found he found a gem this trip. While researching online this morning, I came across these vintage and antique games, LOVE the colors and graphics, and thought you would, too! The images are live links to the websites where I found them; click for more information.

Our three county road trip was very successful so we'll be planning more for the future. With 36 counties in Oregon we've just scratched the surface...and next trip I'll try to remember to take photos of the actual places we visit.

Dinah Washington (August 29, 1924 – December 14, 1963), born Ruth Lee Jones, was a blues, R&B and jazz singer. She has been cited as "the most popular black female recording artist of the 1950s", and called "The Queen of the Blues". She is a 1986 inductee of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Dinah Washington was (and is) simply amazing...one of my all time favorites.

Vintage Beach Cottage

Christmas Day we took a drive to one of our favorite places--the Oregon Coast. I've mentioned before that we plan to live there sometime in the future. Each part of the coastline has it's own beauty; this day we visited the central section in the city of Newport.

Tucked in the middle of Newport, only two blocks from the ocean, is the historic neighborhood of Nye Beach. In it's hey-day Nye Beach was THE place to be, and a major revitalization in the last five years has made it charming once again. Cafes, coffee, a tea house, shopping, visual arts center, performing arts center, library and an eclectic assortment of vacation rentals all convene within a half-mile radius so everything is in walking distance.

We happened upon a home for sale (see photo above--first building on the left). Built in 1890, the 2 bed, 1 bath rambling structure is pretty much a tear-down at this point, but the lot is a double, and on a corner, and we started daydreaming of how to maximize that potential.

While browsing on Etsy tonight I "collected" this handful of vintage items that I think would make a beach cottage for two very simple and cozy. Hope you enjoy my finds!

Vintage Decor: Upcycled Christmas Wreaths

My wreaths are all upcycled this year--rescued during the summer from various estate sales. The gold wreath is decorating the front door to our apartment. I added a few white faux poinsettias from Christmases past.

The red and green wreath is on the main entry to our building; embellished with a swatch of striped ribbon and three red faux poinsettia blooms.

This bottom wreath--along with a super selection of fantastic vintage holiday cards, decorations and lighting--are available now in my shop.

The Cadillac Ranch - Ten graffiti-covered cars that look like they took a nosedive into the soil, were developed into an art installment in 1974 by millionaire Stanley Marsh III and a trio of architects. Pack a can of spray paint--visitors are encouraged to add their own art to the vehicles.

Weeki Wachee Springs - In 1947, Newton Perry opened the first mermaid show at Florida's Weeki Wachee Springs. An 18-seat underwater theater was built six feet below the surface so visitors can watch the underwater shows, which include renditions of The Little Mermaid as well as the complete history of Weeki Wachee Springs.

W'eel Turtle - The giant turtle on the side of Century Avenue in Dunseith, North Dakota, was erected in 1982 to pay homage to the nearby Turtle Mountain State Park. The 18-foot-tall tortoise was built from 2,000 old wheel rims, and has been known to sport a festive Santa hat during the holidays!

Vintage Shopping: Kalama, Washington

We took a Sunday drive a few weeks back...to Kalama, Washington. Kalama is known for two neat things: antique stores and Twilight. Do tell, you say? Well, they have an cozy main street full of eclectic antique shops--the variety is superb--and their high school building and parking lot was featured as the fictional high school in the Twilight movies.

The nice thing about Kalama--it's just far enough qualify as a day trip but not so far that we feel tired before we even get to the fun part...hunting for vintage!

We don't get much excitement from the shops full of furniture and acres of glassware. We do get happy about shops with variety, kitsch, mid century and shabby chic goodness.

Okay, I should say that I get happy about the shabby chic and kitsch. Chris really appreciated finding this shop with it's library nook and welcoming chairs. According to my hubby, this is just the thing that every department store needs for the men who shop with their wives. Plus a flat screen TV and mini fridge stocked with snacks.

Our "haul" from this journey was small but worthy. Come visit the shop in the weeks ahead for updates of our goodies discovered in Kalama!
